How to succeed at hive?

Hive is no walk in the park. Getting in is tough, and graduating is even tougher. But if you do make it, you’re in for a life-changing ride.

The 1.5-year program at Hive is valued at around €10,000, yet it is completely free of charge. A good way to think about studying at Hive is to see it as a once-in-a-lifetime scholarship that you have earned through serious grit and determination.

Work with the people around you

Hive is a peer-to-peer school. You’ll learn new things, make progress and solve problems together with your fellow students. You are expected to discuss the challenges and ask for help from your peers.

Success at Hive is less about natural talent and more about showing up, building routine, and staying engaged with the work and the community. Hive demands a lot but you’re not alone with the challenge.

Manage yourself

There are no teachers or lectures at Hive. There are no long holidays. Students must take ownership of their schedules, their progress, and their learning.

The program is designed to be immersive. We expect students to treat Hive like a full-time job, which generally means 30 to 40 hours of focused work per week.

Essential behaviours

To succeed at Hive, certain behaviours really matter. Here, we break them down and show what they look like in everyday practice.

< CONSISTENCY >

You make steady progress by working regularly. You treat Hive as a full-time responsibility, showing up each day and putting in focused effort, even when the tasks feel difficult or progress is slow.

< GOAL ORIENTATION >

You put focussed effort towards making progress with your projects and deadlines in the given timeframe. This includes completing peer evaluations and exams.

< Discipline >

You show up and work even when motivation is low. You prioritise long-term goals and stay focused, especially when distractions arise.

< Time Management >

You set realistic goals, plan your time, and adjust your approach when needed. You understand that finishing a task well is better than chasing perfection and never completing it. You keep moving forward.

< Accountability >

You take ownership of your learning. You meet deadlines, track your progress, and ask for help when needed. You do not blame others or wait to be rescued. You are in charge of your own path.

< Dedication >

You treat Hive as a meaningful priority. This could mean dialling down other commitments for the duration of the studies, knowing this focused effort will pay off in the long run.

If you do the work, the results will follow

Hive is built on shared responsibility and mutual accountability. When students do the work, the results follow.

The behaviours that lead to success at Hive are the same behaviours that lead to success in the professional world. If you show up, if you’re willing to persist, reflect, and grow, you’ll come out the other side transformed.

You’ll have the skills, confidence, and network to start your career in technology. And chances are, you’ll have made real friends along the way.
