Applying to Hive

Register at intra.hive.fi to start your application and complete the following steps:

  1. Play and pass the online game
  2. Attend a check-in event (either on-site or online)
  3. Participate in the Selection Sprint, a 3-week immersive programming training in Helsinki that defines who gets accepted.

Check-in events and Selection Sprints have limited spots and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Yes and no.

The first two steps, the online game and the check-in, can be done remotely.

The third step, the selection sprint, takes place entirely on-site at the Hive campus. You need to be in Helsinki for the entire selection period.

The studies at Hive are full-time and on-site.

There are two requirements for applying:

  1. You need to be at least 18 years old.
  2. You must be an EU citizen or hold a residence permit that allows you to study in Finland.

It is not possible to apply for a student visa based on studies at Hive.

The check-in is a mandatory step in the application process.

During the check-in event, you learn about what it takes to apply and study at Hive. We try to be as transparent as possible so you can make the right decision for you.

Check-ins are hosted both online and on-site at the Hive campus. You need to participate in only one check-in.

See the next check-in dates on the How to apply page.

It’s a 3-week, intensive selection period at the Hive campus. It is a full-time, hands-on, and fast-paced experience that requires your full commitment. You don’t need any previous experience.

During the sprint, you will:

  • learn the basics of programming
  • get a taste of our learning model
  • participate in Hive’s community life
  • collaborate with the other applicants.

We select the students from the sprint. You also see if our model works for you. If not, it’s OK to drop out.

Complete the following steps:

  • register on intra.hive.fi
  • pass the online game
  • attend a check-in event.

After this, you register for a sprint on intra.hive.fi The registration is open on a specific date, only for 1 hour, and works on a first-come, first-served basis.

No.

We don’t disclose the specific selection criteria. We want the applicants to focus on learning and being themselves. You shouldn’t try to tick any boxes or be fixated on scores.

Studies at Hive are intense and require motivation, discipline, consistency, and a curious, collaborative mindset. We take multiple factors into account in the selection to build a well-rounded and diverse learning community.

For selection sprints that take place in the winter (January and February), you will start your studies in April.

For selection sprints in the summer (August and September), your studies will start in October.

You cannot postpone the start of your studies.

Yes, but we advise against it.

The selection period is designed to be a one-time, intensive experience that helps you and us assess whether Hive’s learning model is the right fit. You should approach it with full commitment from the start.

If you do not pass, you can reapply once. You create a new account at intra.hive.fi and start the entire process from the start. There must be at least 300 days between attempts. You can only attend the Selection Sprint twice in total.

Studying at Hive

18 months. Full-time commitment.

No.

The studies happen on-site on our campus in Helsinki.

You cannot study part-time.

We discourage working during the studies. However, if you work part-time alongside your studies, get ready for hard work for 18 months. Luckily, you have a supportive community around you.

We don’t have any teachers, tutors, or any traditional school structures.

Community-based learning: Our students learn by collaborating. They share knowledge, ask questions, teach each other, and evaluate each other’s work. As a result, they develop skills in teamwork, responsibility, and communication.

Project-based learning: Our students learn by doing and experimenting. They work on increasingly complex projects and figure out how to solve them. As a result, they develop skills in creative problem-solving, self-drivenness, critical thinking, ownership, and intellectual rigor.

Because we want our students to learn how to learn.

Without traditional teaching, our Hivers get the confidence and skill to constantly teach themselves.

However, there is a pedagogical team at Hive that makes sure the learning environment works.

Other students.

There is a grading criterion that students use to go through each other’s projects.

Project reviews can last anything between 30 minutes and 2 hours, and they are one of the best ways to learn at Hive.

You start with fundamental programming concepts.

As you progress, you will learn more about data structures and algorithms, backend and API development, network programming, front-end and web development, DevOps and Systems administration, and more.

Read more about the curriculum here.

Yes. We are open 24/7.

However, that flexibility comes with responsibility: you need to still consistently come to campus, engage with others, and participate in Hive’s community.

You can only pause your studies if you are given a formal study exemption by the staff (paternal leave, sickness, or other exceptional life situation).

There are no official vacations. You must plan when you can take time off and make sure you don’t slow your progress or miss a deadline. In practice, you have less time to take off than you might think.

If you are away for an extended period without an approved exemption, your studies will be considered discontinued.

After graduation

No.

This isn’t a traditional school; you won’t get a traditional degree. In tech, employers care more about your skills, mindset, and how you work.

During your time at Hive, you’ll build a personal portfolio, and when you finish, you’ll receive a certificate confirming the completion of the program.

Whatever you want to. Jobs and tech are changing rapidly.

You learn the skill of learning how to learn, which means that you can apply for any technical position there is. Our Hivers work in 200+ companies across industries, and some have started their own startups.

Yes and no.

We will not offer you a job on a silver platter; you have to apply for positions and do the work yourself.

However, we offer a lot of support for getting employed.

  • A mentoring program twice per year that connects you with software engineers working in the field
  • Events and workshops that boost your employability.

We help you train a mindset.

The studies teach you how to learn, think critically, and understand a variety of tech and tools.

We do not limit you to a single technology or a framework. Since technology evolves constantly, you will graduate with the ability to adapt and maintain relevant skills throughout your entire career.

Yes.

Come work remotely, join events, organize events, mentor current students, or just chill and play ping pong.

Here’s a list for you

  • Lifelong access to campus and events
  • Graduation certificate
  • Spot at the graduation celebration
  • Network of incredible problem-solvers.

We help you train the right mindset, get the needed skills, and meet relevant people.

We have a dedicated event track that just focuses on supporting those who want to build their own product.
